2017: my favourite albums

2017 was a great year for music. There were so many great albums released and a lot of them I'm still playing mid-2018. Speaks volumes! Below is a list of the albums that were the soundtrack to my 2017. I hope there's at least a few of your favourites on the list too and don't forget to check out the albums you haven't listened to yet!

big krit: 4eva is a mighty long time

Prior to this album, Big K.R.I.T.'s last project, "Cadillactica", was released in 2014. I don't remember if I ever listened to his music before I heard this album but I was sold from the first listen. He's a great rapper and producer who clearly put a lot of care into delivering one of the best albums of 2017 to his (im)patiently waiting fans.

My Favourite Songs: Big K.R.I.T., Confetti, Big Bank (feat. T.I.), 1999 (feat. Lloyd), Ride Wit Me (feat. Bun & Pimp C), Get Up 2 Come Down (feat. CeeLo Green & Sleepy Brown), Layup, Aux Cord, Get Away, Mixed Messages, Price Of Fame, Drinking Sessions (feat. Keyon Harrold), The Light (feat. Bilal, Robert Glasper Jr., Kenneth Whalum, Burniss Earl Travis II) and Bury Me In Gold.

big sean: i decided

This was one of the albums that I constantly played in 2017 and I personally thought it was a good follow up to 2015's critically acclaimed "Dark Sky Paradise". Introspective, inspirational and sombre; I always found myself putting in on when I needed to focus or wanted a mellow vibe to my evening.

My Favourite Songs: Light (feat. Jeremih), Bounce Back, Jump Out The Window, Same Time Pt 1. (feat. Twenty88), Halfway Off The Balcony, Voices In My Head/Stick To The Plan and Sunday Morning Jetpack (feat. The Dream)

big sean & metro boomin: double or nothing

"Double Or Nothing" by Big Sean & Metro Boomin dropped in early December. It was obvious by Big Sean's Instagram posts that they were working together but no one expected a joint album. "Pull Up N Wreck" cemented my excitement for this project because this song is a bop and will forever remain one. When the album dropped, it took a couple of listens for me to find other songs that I love just as much as "Pull Up N Wreck" so the project, as a whole, definitely grew on me and I'm still listening to the album in mid 2018.

My Favourite Songs: Big Bidness (feat. 2 Chainz); Who's Stopping Me; Pull Up N Wreck (feat. 21 Savage); Savage Time; In Tune and No Hearts, No Love.

daniel caesar: freudian

Daniel Caesar is one of my favourite things about 2017. I first heard his music on the Joe Budden Podcast, prior to his debut album "Freudian" being released. I fell in love with his smooth voice immediately. At a time where R&B is seeing a resurgence, his debut album immediately grabbed my attention. It's pure R&B from someone who SINGS, ok?! Hopefully I get to see him live and I look forward to more music from him.

My Favourite Songs: Get You (feat. Kali Uchis), Best Part (feat. H.E.R.), Neu Roses (Transgressor's Songs), Loose, We Find Love, Blessed, Take Me Away (feat. Syd) and Transform (feat. Charlotte Day Wilson).

goldlink: at what cost

This album features one of the most important songs in my life - "Crew". We also got to hear Jasmine Sullivan experimenting with a different sound, which really works well on "Meditation" and I hope she branches out more. Goldlink definitely cemented his capabilities with "At What Cost" and I look forward to more music (and collaborations).

My Favourite Songs: Meditation (feat. Jasmine Sullivan & KAYTRANADA), Herside Story (feat. Hare Squead) and Crew (feat. Brent Faiyaz & Shy Glizzy)

H.E.R.: H.E.R.

H.E.R. aka Gabriella Wilson is another one of my favourite things about 2017. This was one of the albums that I heavily played in 2017 and is still on constant rotation in 2018. The content is relatable and the production doesn't overshadow H.E.R.'s amazing voice. It's easy to see why I saw so many people covering her songs on YouTube and Instagram. As a massive R&B fan, I was impatiently waiting for a new influx of R&B artists who have something new to offer and H.E.R ticks all the boxes.

My Favourite Songs (I love every song on the album BTW): U, Best Part (feat. Daniel Caesar), Changes and Free.

jay z: 4:44

I haven't forgiven Jay Z yet for causing Beyoncé so much pain and heartache but this was a good start to understanding where his head was and is at now. It's confessional and features production by No I.D., which aids in captivating the listener. There's much to learn and I particularly appreciate the advocacy for therapy and doing better as man.

My Favourite Songs: The Story of O.J., Smile, 4:44 and Family Feud (feat. Beyoncé).

sza: ctrl

SZA's long awaited debut album was very much worth the wait. Not only did she deliver but she exceeded my expectations. I played this album so much that I had to take a break and then I when I dived back in, it was like listening to it for the first time. Out of all my favourites on the album, "Broken Clocks" is the one & I'm sure I've played it at least 500 times. Generally, the content, production and collaborations are perfect. It's such a good album and it's definitely in the top 5 of my favourite albums of 2017.

My Favourite Songs: Love Galore (feat. Travis Scott), The Weekend, Go Gina, Garden (Say It Like Dat), Broken Clocks, Wavy Interlude (feat. James Fauntleroy) and Pretty Little Birds (feat. Isaiah Rashad).

This is also in my top 5 albums of 2017. "Trip" was heavily overlooked because of poor marketing by Def Jam. It's really such a shame because we all know how talented Jhené is and this album deserved to shine brighter than it did.

My Favourite Songs: While We're Young, When We Love, Sativa (feat. Swae Lee), New Balance, Newer Balance (Freestyle), You Are Here, Never Call Me (feat. Kurupt), Overstimulated, Psilocybin (Love in Full Effect) [feat. Dr. Chill] and Trip (feat. Mali Music).

This is the first 2 Chainz album that I have really enjoyed, even despite there being four tracks (out of 16) that I didn't really care for at all. The album has a variety of features that don't overshadow him but compliment his style. Side Note: 2 Chainz should collaborate with Monica more because "Burglar Bars" is so dope!

My Favourite Songs: Saturday Night, Good Drank (feat. Gucci Mane & Quavo), 4AM (feat. Travis Scott), Poor Fool (feat. Swae Lee), It's A Vibe (feat. Ty Dolla $ign, Trey Songz & Jhené Aiko), Rolls Royce Bitch, Sleep When U Die, Blue Cheese (feat. Migos), OG Kush Diet and Burglar Bars (feat. Monica).

So far, each Kendrick Lamar album has been different. I don't believe anyone knew what to expect from K.Dot's fourth project, especially after the mixed reception to "To Pimp A Butterfly". When "The Heart Part 4" dropped on 23rd March, I felt less uncertain about it and he delivered an album that I still play heavily in 2018. Props to Kendrick for always giving us hip hop fans a new K.Dot sound with each album.

My Favourite Songs: Blood, DNA, Yah, Element, Feel, Loyalty (feat. Rihanna), Pride, Humble, Lust, Love (feat. Zachari), God and Duckworth.

After hearing so much positive reviews from people whose music taste I rate, I decided to check out "Flower Boy" for myself. To say I was not disappointed is an understatement! This is one of the albums of 2017 that I heavily played; there wasn't a day that I didn't play at least one song from this album. I'm still playing it in 2018 and I doubt I'll stop anytime soon because it's THAT good!

My Favourite Songs: Where The Flower Blooms (feat. Frank Ocean), See You Again (Kali Uchis), Who Dat Boy (feat. A$AP Rocky), Pothole (feat. Jaden Smith), Boredom (feat. Rex Orange County & Anna of the North), 911/Mr Lonely (feat. Frank Ocean and Steve Lacy), Droppin' Seeds (feat. Lil' Wayne), Glitter and Enjoy Right Now, Today.

Rapsody is so talented! "Laila's Wisdom", her second album and first with Roc Nation, was predominantly produced by 9th Wonder. This album ensured everyone paid attention to her in 2017 and if she continues on this path, she'll show she is a force to be reckoned with.

My Favourite Songs: Laila's Wisdom, Power (feat. Kendrick Lamar & Lance Skiiiwalker), Chrome (Like Ooh), Ridin' (feat. GQ), Nobody (feat. Anderson .Paak, Black Thought & Moonchild), Black & Ugly (feat. BJ the Chicago Kid), U Used 2 Love Me (feat. Terrace Martin) and OooWee (feat. Anderson .Paak)
