Last week was the 20th anniversary of a classic album by the legendary The Roots. Released on 23rd February 1999, the album was made alongside other Soulquarians’ albums by Erykah Badu (Mama’s Gun) and Common (Like Water For Chocolate). By the way if you didn’t know, The Roots; Common; Erykah Badu; Talib Kweli; Mos Def; James Poyser; Questlove; Q-Tip; Bilal & the late J Dilla (RIP) were all part of the Soulquarians music collective.
Anyway, two members of the collective feature on two of my favourite songs from the album - “Act Too (The Love of My Life)” feat. Common and “You Got Me” feat. Erykah Badu & Eve, which Jill Scott is also credited on. “Things Fall Apart” is regarded as The Roots’ breakthrough album because it’s a masterpiece that solidified their position in hip hop. If you haven’t heard this album, what are you waiting?!
