Released on 23rd April 2016, the world stopped as Beyoncé told her truths & shed another layer of her public image through art. Since its release, you could only stream “Lemonade” on Tidal and purchase it. After 3 years, Beyoncé released the critically-acclaimed album on all other streaming platforms this week!
Before it was released, I didn’t know that she could exceed my expectations any more than she’s done already but she definitely did here! Lemonade is an eclectic mix of various genres (e.g R&B, reggae and rock) and it’s organic as fuck. There’s nothing pretentious about how this album & the accompanying film explores black womanhood & our treatment by society, black culture, the poetry of Warsaw Shire, Oshun and so much more.
When I first listened to the album, it was hard to pick my faves as I genuinely loved every song but “Pray You Catch Me”, “Formation”, “Love Drought” and “All Night” are still my faves to this day. Side note: “Don’t Hurt Yourself” and “Sorry” are close behind though! This album and the film are the embodiment of what it looks like when you put your all (and then some) into your craft. “Lemonade” is a top tier Beyoncé project so if you still haven’t heard and watched it yet, make time today.
