My God, it’s been 17 YEARS since Ashanti burst onto the scene with her debut album. The “Ashanti” album was released on 2nd April 2002 and she became one of the few female singers to dominate R&B/pop in the early 2000s on a major level. This album features her biggest hit “Foolish”, as well as “Happy”, “Leaving (Always On Time Part 2)” feat. Ja Rule, “Baby” and “Unfoolish” feat. Biggie.
No matter how many albums I have liked by Ashanti, this album has always been my favourite. It’s a classic R&B album that highlights her signature sound and songwriting abilities. For many men and women from my generation, we remember how significant this album was for R&B music, especially with the Murder Inc. movement at the time. Kudos to Ashanti for not only giving us great music but a timeless album that I still play to this day.
