“Supa Dupa Fly”, we speak your name! If you haven’t guessed by my enthusiasm, this is my favourite Missy Elliott album. Released on 15th July 1997, her debut album changed hip hop & put Missy in the legends of hip hop conversation.
Multi-faceted, innovative and free-spirited, she had all eyes on her & continues to to this day. “Supa Dupa Fly” has so many hits & great album cuts that I wish got more recognition. “The Rain”, for instance, always gets everyone in their rapper bag when reciting that first verse alone! Other popular singles “Sock It To Me”, “Beep Me 911” feat. 702 & Magoo and “Hit Em Wit Da Hee” feat. Lil’ Kim & Mocha were great follow ups to “The Rain”. Personally, my favourite song on the album is “Best Friends”, which features the late Aaliyah. It’s a beautiful song that perfectly displays the magic that is their collaborations.
This album also features the legend Timbaland, who executive produced it alongside Missy. I could go on & on about how great this album is but you should know that already! But if you don’t, there’s no time like the present to listen to “Supa Dupa Fly”.
