This week, I’ve chosen four of some of my favourite songs from The Roots, SWV, Teedra Moses and Nipsey Hussle (RIP). “Break You Off” featuring Musiq Soulchild was released in 2002 and portrays a man sleeping with a taken woman. The production is sexy and the pairing of Musiq and Black Thought is perfection. The song is also supported by a very dramatic video (defo check that out!).
“When U Cry” is an album cut from SWV’s 1997 “Release Some Tension”. It’s a beautiful song that’s also heartbreaking because you can feel how much “her” world would end if the love she sings about was no more. Teedra Moses’ most famous single, “Be Your Girl”, was released in 2004 on her “Complex Simplicity” album. Teedra sings about her crush on a man & her longing to be his girl. We’ve all been there! Lastly, the late Nipsey’s “Double Up” features Belly & Dom Kennedy. It’s one of my favourite songs on “Victory Lap” & I also love the video too. It details Nipsey’s journey to where he had successfully reached before his untimely death. There’s many jewels in this song (and the rest of the album) so don’t let it go over your head!
