As I write this, I’m trying to recall the exact moment that I fell in love with SZA’s music and I can’t pinpoint it exactly but it might’ve been between 2012-14.
I (im)patiently waited for her debut album whilst endlessly playing her mixtapes & collaborations. After some delays, the two singles “Drew Barrymore” and “Love Galore” feat. Travis Scott were released, followed by “Ctrl” on 9th June 2017 to critical acclaim and a larger following.
After one listen, I was hooked! The content, genres, features and (what I like to call) TDE’s approval stamp made this album one of the best of that year. Actually, one of the best R&B/alternative R&B albums of the last couple of years. This speaks to SZA’s, the other writers and the producers’ (e.g. Top Dawg, Punch & Craig Balmoris) artistry.
To this day (LOL), “Broken Clocks” is my favourite song from the album, followed closely by “Wavy (Interlude)” feat. James Fauntleroy and “The Weekend”. Generally, there’s not a bad song on the album and most songs I would rate at least 4/5 stars.
Despite SZA sharing that she kept working and reworking songs and was battling anxiety, the album turned out well & I look forward to her sophomore project.
