It feels so long ago that I first heard 6lack’s music via The Joe Budden Podcast. Even though at the time, the R&B resurgence had already started, I remember being mesmerised by his sound and he stuck out like a sore thumb. You couldn’t help but want to listen to his catalogue. The funny thing is, I postponed looking for his music because I could never remember his name but when I did, I found “FREE 6LACK” and the rest is history.
The debut album by the Atlanta singer, rapper, songwriter and producer was released on 18th November 2016 and I spent the whole of 2017 (and beyond) playing the album nonstop. The storytelling and rawness in the project makes it a captivating listen. You’ll either love the whole album or at minimum, 90% of it. The album’s genre ranges from alternative R&B to hiphop, with 6lack being the main writer on every song bar one. That’s probably why the project feels so organic and is not only a true testament to 6lack but to those who continued as well.
I don’t often like a whole album but “FREE 6LACK” is an exception. Obviously, I do have my favourites with “Never Know”, “PRBLMS” and “Worst Luck” being some of them but overall, I appreciate albums where you can tell the artist put their blood, sweat and tears into trying to make a solid album that will stand the test of time. WHEW! I can’t stan enough for this album and 6lack! Please, if you’ve been living under a rock for the past couple of years and haven’t heard this yet, make time today!
