On 19th July 2019, Beyoncé released a huge contender for album of the year - “The Lion King: The Gift”. She produced and curated the compilation album, which was obviously inspired by The Lion King. Eight of the songs I’ve picked are a mixture of R&B, afrobeat & hip hop and feature Beyoncé, Blue Ivy, Burna Boy, Jay Z, Childish Gambino, Wizkid Tierra Whack and more. The songs capture the film’s storyline so well and you can tell exactly where you are in the story, even without the film interludes. Also, I deeply appreciate the use of African artists & producers for this album & can’t wait to see the accolades it receives.
The grime legend, Kano, is back and I’m literally in grime heaven losing my shit to the music he’s already dropped! “Class of Deja” features legends Ghetts & D Double E and is a nod to the iconic pirate radio station Deja Vu FM that was instrumental in building these three’s and other grime legends’ careers. The song reminds those who forgot that these three are veterans in the scene & you could NEVER on your best day!
When I first saw the “Trouble” video, I couldn’t even explain what I felt when D Double E and Ghetts appeared and performed the song. I immediately went to Apple Music to see if the song was available to stream! If you didn’t grow up in the grime era like my generation did, you can’t really understand how sick this is and NEEDED. It’s like no time has passed since these three were in Nasty Crew & I’m living for it. Kano’s upcoming album “Hoodies All Summer” drops on 30th August 2019 and I can’t wait to hear the rest of the project. Boop boop! 🙌🏾
