There’s FIVE Mary J. Blige albums that I’ll always hold dear and “My Life” is one of them. This autobiographical album isn’t a light listen as it focuses on Mary’s drugs and alcohol battles, clinical depression and abusive relationship with K-Ci Hailey (from Jodeci). She’s so vulnerable and exposed on this album and it’s still heartbreaking listening to how much pain she was in. Kudos to Mary and her team on perfectly capturing her raw emotion and delivering a classic album that’s also timeless.
One of the many things I love about “My Life” is that it features one of my favourite covers, “I’m Going Down” (originally Rose Royce’s song). 🖤It also has some of my favourite songs of ALL TIME too - “Mary Jane (All Night Long)”, “My Life”, “Mary’s Joint”, “I Love You” and “Be Happy”. Elite MJB songs!
Another thing I love about it is that “Be Happy” is the last song. She’s still pining for K-Ci and hoping that they can make it work but she’s also considering finding a new love that she can call her own. Her optimism and wanting to actually be happy shows itself in these two ways that is very real in heartbreak. Logic vs your heart. Logic should win but the heart wants what it wants, despite how shitty the person has been to you. You can’t help but root for Mary (and yourself) and hope she/you don’t give him/her another chance and move on!
All banter aside, “My Life” is an important album in our culture and if you’ve been living under a rock and haven’t ever heard this album before, it’s time to get acquainted.
